LOCHABER RUGBY CLUBS SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT

Lochaber Rugby Club host their annual Seven-a- Side Tournament this Saturday 5th May at Banavie, kicking off at 12 noon with eight teams competing for the Quaich.  Last year’s winners were the Black Watch, sadly unable to attend this year as they are not long back from serving in Iraq and are now on annual leave. They will be greatly missed, as they always provide us with excellent rugby to watch but we can’t deny them their well-earned R & R with their family.  The teams competing this year are Lochaber 1st XV, Lochaber Golden Oldies, Mull, Oban, Highland, Northern Constabulary and The Fire brigade and Aberdeen-shire.

Club Captain, Kenny Turnbull, is looking forward to a good day to finish off what has been a very difficult season for the team with the pitch drainage problems, but he hopes that  all being well this will not be an issue on Saturday and the rain will stay away!  Players, Committee Members and Club Members all say there is a special buzz on Sevens day with lots of great rugby and craic during the day, followed by live music and entertainment from locally talented musicians as well as a few home grown club members  to keep the party mood going.  Hot and cold refreshments are available all day in the Clubhouse and everyone is welcome to come along and join in with this special day.

LOCHABER ARTISTIC ROLLER SKATING CLUB

Lochaber Artistic Roller Skating Club invites you to come and join them in the Nevis Centre on Sunday 6th May between 1pm-4pm where they will be holding an open day to celebrate their 25th Anniversary.

Who could have possibly known 25 years ago when Frieda Alexander founded the club in Kilmallie Hall that it would still be as popular today as it was back then? Over the years the club has attracted hundreds of youngsters from all over Lochaber and further a field, ageing from 3+ upwards, providing them with excellent training. Many of these children have worked their way through the skating grading system and are now part of our dedicated team of coaches.

Under the guidance of Frieda and her coaches the club has competed over the years at national, international and world level and has managed to take an impressive number of medals and trophies back to Lochaber.

The club meets up most Sundays between 12-4pm in the Nevis Centre and anyone wishing to give skating a go is most welcome to come along for a try.

SOUTH LOCHABER BOWMEN

The SLB’s have been very busy with the Scottish Championships at Linlithgow and have come back with another Scottish Indoor Champion – Andrea Koster won Gold in the AFBB (Adult Female BareBow).

They are also hosting the Highland Archery Open On the 12th & 13th May – details to follow.

The meteoric rate with which archery is becoming established as a sport in Lochaber is  testament to the hard work put in by the South Lochaber Bowmen.  To read how they have developed the sport from an idea in the pub to having three new clubs throughout Lochaber within two years, read here:  SOUTH LOCHABER BOWMEN – the Club’s success story

MALLAIG AND DISTRICT BOWLING CLUB

Writes Dennis Eddie:

“We have recently returned from the World Championships in Ireland. The trip was a great experience where 13 teams gathered, mostly from Europe, but there were even delegates from India.

We started on day one playing a very good Irish side and eventually lost 8-3 -not bad when it was over 10 ends so it was just an average of 1 shot per end. Wales and England were to follow with both beating us and then the Isle of Man, which we ran out winners. The next day we were drawn against teams from Sweden, to whom we lost but then Germany and Belgium yielded 2 wins for the Scottish team. After the round robin event, Ireland were through to play Wales in the final.  A gripping match watched by two to three hundred people, with Ireland eventually winning on an extra end -the same Irish team we had a close encounter with on our first game!

We had a great time and learned a lot, making friends into the bargain. (The Germans were a Hoot!)”
